City Airlines, the Group's new airline Lufthansa which will be based at Munich Airport - LH's second German base after Frankfurt - will begin flight operations in the summer of 2024.
The airline, which was founded last year and has already started making waves in the spring with the launch of its website and "Take off to Europe!" claim, has received its Air Operator's Certificate (Aoc) from the German Federal Authority.
Not content with already having Eurowings, Brussels, Swiss, Austrian, Lufthansa Cityline, Air Dolomiti - and probably Ita Airways - the German giant relaunches its European commitment with a regional airline that will have an all-Airbus fleet.
Flights over Frankfurt and Munich
Lufthansa therefore wants to Replicating the carrier Cityline's experiment at Munich airport. with a range of connections to major European cities, more peripheral airlines, and small to medium continental airports.
Unlike what was announced in the spring, however, the newly formed City Airlines Will not only operate on Frankfurt, but also on Munich, thus adding to the presence of "sister" Cityline and also offering feeder flights for Lufthansa.
Finally, the German Group's press note reminds that the recruitment of operational personnel Will start in November 2023, with the pilots and cabin crew members required for the launch.
The Germanwings factor
In essence, then, the goal would be to improve and enhance connections from the rest of Europe to LH hubs to bring passengers then to the rest of the world. This model, also tracing the successful experiment with Air Dolomiti feeding LH's German bases from Italy, needs to Leaner, more efficient and less expensive airlines.
The fleet, however, will consist of Airbus A319 or A320 - aircraft larger than the Embraer aircraft used by Air Dolomiti or Cityline's Bombardier aircraft-for a very specific reason: it is the solution devised by German top management to hire-with lighter contracts, ed. - the 250 commanders and flight attendants from Germanwings, the carrier closed in April 2020.
In fact, Lh's note specifies that "for Group employees interested in switching to City Airlines, offers with voluntary exchange conditions may be negotiated. This includes in particular the staff of Lufthansa CityLine."
"With City Airlines we want to create a new perspective for the coming decades and secure sustainable jobs in Germany. This is the only way we can grow and strengthen the Munich and Frankfurt hubs," he said.o Jens Fehlinger, managing director of City Airlines.
It is still unclear, however, what will be the operational of City Airlines despite the fact that as early as last summer the German giant announced the creation of a new division with the task of creating a new airline.
