Paris and France will be at the center of the world between July and August 2024 for Olympic Games number XXXIII. Hence, a huge amount of flights and connections over the French capital are expected throughout the summer and a congestion of activities in the Charles de Gaulle mega hub since the Olympic Games will coincide with one of the highest density periods for air travel.
Beware, however, of July 26, 2024, which is the day the Olympics will kick off.
Airports off limits
France's Federation Nationale de l'Aviation et de ses Metiers (Fnam) announced that on that very date, all Paris airports- Charles de Gaulle, Paris-Orly, Le Bourget and Beauvais Tillé - will remain completely closed throughout the duration of the opening ceremony.
Also on July 26, 2024, prohibited airspace will be closed over all of Paris and within a 150-kilometer radius between 7 p.m. and midnight.
For those who had already bought a ticket for the upcoming summer vacation, or for those who simply Are planning a flight or a stopover in Paris. on this day, it is good to keep in mind the risk of having to land or depart from one of the airports in the Capital.
The flight may be canceled or have its arrival/departure time or airport changed.
La Dirección General de Aviación Civil (Dgac) has already stressed that airlines are working to ensure most flights, passenger safety consistent with the preventive measures introduced for the Olympics (which will take place until Aug. 11).
The airlines' plans
Air France and the management company Aéroports de Paris (ADP) are developing a plan to minimize the impact on flight operations, and at the same time all airlines are contacting passengers who-as of today-are affected by the July 26 stopover closures. In addition, full details of cancelled or rescheduled flights and the type of restrictions that will be applied during the Olympics period will be announced in the coming months.
This is certainly not the first time such measures have been applied during internationally renowned events such as the Olympic Games. Both at Athens 2004 either to Beijing 2008 airspace around the capitals were closed and airports suspended operations for several hours.
