New for those traveling with electronic ID cards from Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, technology helping to make the passenger experience at the airport faster and safer.
Just days after activation at Ciampino's "G.B. Pastine" airport, now also at Italy's main airport, Fiumicino's "Leonardo da Vinci" airport, it is possible to use electronic gates (e-gates), until now intended only for passport control, with the Italian ID card.
The 32.4 million Italian CIEs issued to those over the age of 14 after Feb. 7, 2018 will therefore allow passengers' travel experience to be simplified, in complete security: they will simply present their electronic ID card produced for the Ministry of the Interior by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato to the e-gates, thus speeding up their personal document control procedures thanks to this innovative service.
This novelty brings Capital city hubs to be the first in Italy to introduce the latest provisions of the Ministry of the Interior Department of Public Security which recently authorized the use of electronic gates for electronic ID card holders for the following 15 destinations as well:
- Albania
- Bosnia and Herzegovina;
- Bulgaria;
- Cyprus;
- Georgia;
- Ireland;
- Kosovo;
- North Macedonia;
- Moldova;
- Montenegro;
- Romania;
- Serbia;
- Turkey;
- Egypt (organized travel for tourism purposes only);
- Tunisia (organized travel for tourism purposes only).
As for countries not listed, nothing changes and thus remains necessary, for passage at the Border through the electronic gates, the electronic passport issued by the Police Headquarters.
Every year in the airports of Aeroporti di Roma over 50% of passengers of all nationalities use electronic gates (e-gates) for passport control with significant reduction in time for screening, as it brings the two airports of Fiumicino and Ciampino to the top of European airports in terms of use and functionality of e-gates.
A total of about 80 e-gates are installed at both airports. At Ciampino, the airport that first initiated this innovation for electronic ID cards, in the first week of operation about 15% of Italian passengers chose to use the e-gates instead of the traditional controls.
