Like last year, also in 2024 Marriott Bonvoy, the loyalty program of the hotel chain of the same name, is launching a parachute to ensure happy degrowth for members who have failed to renew their status.
In this article:
Marriott will offer elite members a soft landing, soft landing applies to colo. who have not renewed the status held, and who have not even come close. The soft landing policy present in many loyalty programs guarantees not to go from the stars to the stables, but to be able to restart just one step below the level possessed the previous year, regardless of the number of nights stayed.
What are the possible scenarios
- Members who reached their existing elite status again in 2023 will have their current status renewed until February 2025
- Members who have not renewed their existing elite status in 2023 will be offered a level below their current status until February 2025. Members will see their new status in March 2024 and will be able to enjoy their existing status until February 2024.
- Members who achieved higher elite status in 2023. already have a state expiration date of February 2025.
Who the Bonvoy parachute is for.
I am seriously starting to think about betting that the soft landing will be renewed again next year, to sleep less in the Marriotts during 2024.
The reason is simple, right now they are Titanium Elite, if over the course of this year I sleep fewer than 50 nights in Marriott hotels I may be guaranteed, thanks to soft landing, the Platinum Elite level until February 2026. Meanwhile, I could review many hotel signs that I frequent much less, compared to Marriott and Hilton.
I would then become a mere Gold member again, only in March 2026, due to the status guaranteed to all holders of American Express Platinum and through the eventual parachute in 2026.
In conclusion
I find the soft landing a very important feature, too bad it is not as popular among loyalty programs, but a job change, a momentary problem, a sabbatical from travel can always happen, and having your status reset is not a pleasant thing.
Obviously, if you take advantage of the parachute, you will not have access to annual choice benefits, partly because these are triggered upon reaching certain nights stayed.
