New Fifth Freedom route by Emirates will now connect Miami with with Colombia

Emirates has announced that it will fly from Dubai to Bogota, capital of Colombia, put like that is not an interesting route for passengers departing from Italy, but there is a though.

The international airport of Bogota's El Dorado is located over 2500m above sea level, at this altitude the conditions under which planes can take off change; the air is thinner and therefore the maximum weight of planes on takeoff is reduced. Something similar to what happens, for example, for takeoffs from Addis Ababa which is above an altitude of 2300m. In order to fly between the two cities EK decided to route to Miami, and from there take off again towards Colombia.

That way when it takes off from Bogota, the plane will only have to take on the fuel needed to get to Florida and from there depart for the UAE.

New Fifth Freedom route

A Fifth Freedom route, or Fifth Freedom in Italian, is a connection that a carrier operates between two nations that are not the "home" one. EK operates many such routes such as the Milan/New York or the Bangkok/Hong Kong connection.

Of course Emirates in its statement only talks about the full route, but we Italians might instead really like the extension from Miami to South America, and the reason is simple, the plane that EK will use on this route will be the 777/300, while all the other airlines that fly this route mainly use narrow-body planes, and only Avianda uses the Dreamliner for its daily connection.

Miami Bogota flight details

The flight will operate daily starting June 3, the airline said, will be operated with the Boeing 777-300ER, which is configured with the 3 classic cabins: first, business and economy. Of course, it will be possible to book a full ticket from Bogota to Dubai, or just one of two possible routes: Dubai Miami or Miami Bogota.

The cash ticket is not cheap, but fifth freedom routes are generally very cheap when it comes to award tickets, so this could give you a chance to fly while spending much less from Florida to South America.

Sir Tim Clark said this in a statement.

There are currently no prize tickets yet

Tickets are already on sale, with the'economy on sale for about €450, while First Class prices are way out of the market for a flight of just under 4 hours. Currently, award tickets on the same route are not yet available, but it is a matter of days for this availability to open up as well.
