Trenitalia changes luggage rules, then comes the about-face

It should have been a real revolution in Italian rail transport, but then there was an about-face. The intention was that the new regulation introducing the limit of two passenger luggage aboard the Arrows of Trenitalia (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca); in addition to this, the new rules stipulate that the cases fall within specific dimensions depending on the class of travel in which you are traveling. 

Specifically, For passengers in standard and premium, the sum of luggage dimensions shall not exceed 161 cm, including handles and wheels; For first, business and executive passengers, however, the limit is 183 cm.

New limits also on carrying skis, musical instruments and strollers: may be carried, in addition to the 2 luggage allowed, as long as the total dimensions (length + width + depth) do not exceed the 200 cm. The same applies to the bicycles and the electric scooters: Can only be carried on the train if they are stored inside a bag measuring 80x110x45cm.

We use the conditional because, as mentioned at the beginning, Trenitalia has suspended enforcement of regulations on carrying luggage, scooters and bicycles on board trains. The decision came after the consumer association protests, who demand a confrontation before such stringent rules are introduced; a confrontation that will come next March 6.

"In light of a number of requests, including from consumer associations, Trenitalia announces that it has decided to suspend the application, as of March 1, of the regulation on the transportation of luggage, scooters and bicycles on board trains" reads a note from the company.

According to the regulation-which now slips, therefore, to a later date-all passengers are also required to affix on their luggage a'Label showing the owner's reference. In addition to this, Trenitalia specifies that passenger parcels may only be placed in the designated spaces and no longer near doorways, aisles or vestibules, so as not to annoy other passengers or hinder the work of railway staff. 

"In my ideal world I would want passengers without suitcases in the hold. We want to change people's habits. We want them to travel lighter", these are the words of Ryanair's number 1, Michael O'Leary.

Here, It seems that rail transport is catching up with air transport; there is, however, a few differences. In spite of what happens on the plane, no surcharges will be applied on the train for extra luggage/loads: as it is explained on Trenitalia's website, travelers who do not comply with the new rules will simply receive a fine of €50 and will have to provide Unload luggage at the first station where the train stops.

For now, however - and until further notice - Current regulations remain in effect. The new regulation will come, probably with some modifications, After the railway company's confrontation with consumer associations.
