At last the much-discussed entrance fee became a reality. Last April 25 was the baptism (of fire, given the controversy) for the "access fee" strongly aimed by the city administration of the lagoon city: it is estimated that on the first day alone, Palazzo Dandolo collected 70 thousand euro (net of the sneaky ones).
How does the co-payment work? Who has to pay and who, on the other hand, is exempt? When and how should it be paid? Let's have some clarity.
What is the "access fee" in Venice, what it is used for and how much it amounts to
As of 2024 tourists who want to visit beautiful Venice in the day will have to pay a contribution of 5 euros. The initiative of the municipality, as was to be expected, was met with quite a bit of controversy however the goal is - to a certain extent - commendable: discourage daily travelers and consequently try to prevent the city from filling up especially on bridges or holidays.
On what days do you pay the tax in Venice and how
2024 is the year of the experimentation: they are "only" 29, in fact, the days on which payment is required Of the ticket:
- May day tourists must pay the access fee on days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26;
- June, the "chargeable" days will be the 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd, 29th and 30th;
- July, those who want to visit Venice in the day will be required to shell out the 5 euro ticket on days 6, 7, 13 and 14.
The access fee must be paid through the portal of the city of Venice: once the transaction is made you will receive a QR code which will be required, in case of checks, by the staff in charge.
For which areas of the city of Venice is the access charge required
On the "paid" dates, the ticket will be compulsory both to enter the city of Venice and to visit the major islands; it will not be required, however, on the smaller islands (primarily Murano and Murano, but also Pellestrina, Torcello, Sant'Erasmo, Mazzorbo, Mazzorbetto, Vignole, S. Andrea, the Certosa, San Servolo, S. Clemente, Poveglia and the Lido of Venice).
It should be kept in mind that the ticket is valid for the entire day: once paid, it will therefore be possible to enter and leave, without any restrictions, the areas where it is mandatory.
Who has to pay the Venice tourist tax
As mentioned, the entrance fee is compulsory for all those who wish to visit the city during the day: anyone over the age of 14 who arrives in the Lagoon by any means of transportation (whether by car, train, plane or ferry) Between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on one of the "ticketed" days, he will be required to pay the access fee of 5 euros; those who are "pinched" without a ticket will have to pay not only a penalty (which goes 50 to 300 euros) but also the cost of the co-pay.
Who does not have to pay and who should apply for exemption
Tourists staying overnight in the lagoon city, European Disability Card holders (and their companions), children under the age of 14, as well as those who reside or were born in the municipality of Venice do not have to pay or even apply for an exemption.
Those who reside in the Veneto region, workers, commuters, and students of schools of all levels and universities will have to apply for exemption, and anyone visiting city residents (whether a relative or friend) may also apply for exemption.
If I pay the co-pay by mistake, can I ask for a refund?
Absolutely: it will be sufficient to log into the cancellation portal, enter the reservation code and request a refund. However, it is not possible to change the date on the ticket.
