It promises to be a decidedly warm spring for London Heathrow Airport. And the weather has very little to do with it.
The PCS union announced that in addition to 600 members of the Border Patrol will strike for 4 days, from April 11 to 14, 2024. Immigration officers, employed in passport control, oppose the planned changes to shift patterns that they say would have a detrimental effect on staff and cause more than 200 of them to lose their jobs, among them many are workers with disabilities.
Fran Heathcote, secretary general of the PCS union, said, "Ministers have 14 days to withdraw these unfair and unnecessary proposals or our members at Heathrow will take strike action.
Disappointment over the union's decision shines through from the British Home Office, but they let it be known that they will take all necessary measures so that a smooth service for passengers is guaranteed.
If this were not the case, it would be a not insignificant problem: Heathrow Airport, the hub of British Airways e Virgin Atlantic, is one of the busiest airports in the world as well as the busiest in Europe, and last year alone welcomed nearly 80 million passengers.
