Elegance or comfort? It depends. At a gala, for example, the former is required: heels and shiny brogues are a must. The cabin crew of some airlines, on the other hand, may perhaps opt for the second option. Finally, someone will think: who knows how many times, boarding an airplane, you may have thought, "but how do flight attendants stand 6/8/10 hours in such uncomfortable shoes?!" Lo and behold, it seems that corns and various foot pains will soon become a distant memory.
Starting from May 6 next KLM, the national airline of the Netherlands, will give its employees (from pilots to flight attendants, from ground staff to engineers) the opportunity to wear sneakers: staff may choose to use their own sneakers (provided they meet certain requirements) or, alternatively, they may purchase the KLM-branded sneakers and designed by the Dutch brand Filling Pieces. The motivation for the carrier to take this path is easy to guess: to improve the welfare of its staff.
KLM is not the first company to adopt more comfortable solutions when it comes to its employees' uniforms. PLAY, the Icelandic low-cost airline, in 2021 had decided to abandon the classic uniforms consisting of a jacket and tie or scarf in favor of blazers, t-shirts and sneakers: a decidedly more "friendly" as well as inclusive, in that PLAY's uniforms are genderless.
And again to stay in Northern Europe: also Finnair, starting in 2023, allows its staff to wear sports shoes During working hours.
It will be interesting to find out how many (and which) airlines will choose more comfortable shoes or even full uniforms: will this new trend spread like wildfire around the world? We shall see. In our country, meanwhile, a particularly strict dress code still applies for ITA staff: sneakers are not covered, for now.
