There are the largest U.S. or low-cost airlines of the caliber of Ryanair that sometimes take delivery of even more than one aircraft per day. But for all other carriers it represents an unusual circumstance to receive even more than one new plane a week.
The last week of March can therefore definitely be called historic, for ITA Airways, which has placed a whopping four new aircraft into operation: an Airbus A330-900, an Airbus A321neo, an Airbus A320neo and an Airbus A220-100. In a note, the Italian flag carrier pointed out that the four aircraft were put into service within 24 hours of their arrival at Fiumicino airport.
The 330-900 is the eighth (out of 17 aircraft ordered) of that type to enter the fleet (as opposed to 7 older A330-200 models still in service) and like all ITA's aircraft has been named after an Italian sportsman, in this case athletics champion Stefano Baldini. The A321neo is instead the fourth (out of seven ordered) and was dedicated to the Olympic fencing champion Elisa Di Francisca. THE A320 is the 15th mole in the fleet (compared to 25 ceos still serving) and is named after the footballer Ciro Ferrara. Finally, the third A220-100 was baptized with the name of the soccer goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
With the four arrivals in the last week of March. rose to 44 the number of new generation aircraft 'wearing' the ITA Airways livery, compared with a total fleet of 87 airplanes. Thus, for the first time, the 'new generation' aircraft surpass, in number, the aircraft ITA had inherited from Alitalia when it began operations in October 2021.
As of the first week of April 2024, the fleet of our flag carrier is as follows: 6 Airbus A350-900, 8 A330-900, 7 A330-200, 4 A321neo, 15 A320neo, 25 Airbus A320-200, 11 A319-100, 8 A220-300, 3 A220-100.
In the current year, it is planned to have 26 aircraft who will wear ITA's livery for the first time, bringing the total to 96 while with the new entries some aircraft, formerly Alitalia, A320-200, A319-100 and A330-200 will leave the fleet.
