A wonderful area, ideal for a beautiful family vacation, is the East Tyrol (Osttirol). It is a particularly popular tourist destination because of its natural heritage, which has very few equals. After all, it is here that the largest nature park in all of Central Europe is located, the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, namely the Hohe Tauern National Park.
In this article:
Touristically speaking, East Tyrol can be divided into four distinct areas: the Lienz Dolomites (Lienzer Dolomiten), the Defereggen Valley (Defereggental), the Upper Pusteria Valley (Hochpustertal) and the aforementioned National Park.
All four are highly sought-after destinations in both summer and winter, and if you are planning your next family summer vacation, East Tyrol may be the ideal choice for you.
You could, for example, book your stay at this beautiful family hotel in Tyrol, to be precise in St. Jakob in Defereggen, in the Defereggental. Hotel Jesacherhof is a 4-star superior hotel perfect for a family vacation: especially spacious and comfortable rooms, SPA area, relaxation areas, wellness treatments, vital area, high-quality cuisine, programs for children and adults, etc.
Family activities in the Defereggental
Your hotel is located nestled in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park and so there are countless opportunities for hiking in the midst of nature. Routes are available for all tastes, from the simplest ones, suitable even for baby-trekking, to the decidedly more complex ones suitable for more experienced and properly trained hikers.
If you love waterfalls, in these parts you can see the Umbalfälle waterfalls, the Stallerbach Falls, the Staniskabach Falls and the Krimml waterfalls (Krimmler Wasserfälle); the latter are the highest in all of Austria.
A beautiful family outing is one that can be taken by taking the Innergschlöss nature trail in Matrei in Osttirol. The Innergschlöss is considered one of the most beautiful valley bottoms in the entire Eastern Alps.
St. Jakob is also home to an aquatic museum, theHaus des Wassers, where one has the opportunity to take fun-based environmental trainings. There are several programs offered to tourists in July and August.
If you also like lakes, then not to be missed is the Bödensee, a beautiful mountain lake. To see it, you can organize a hike from St. Jakob and through the Trojeralmtal valley to the Durfeldalm; from there you should continue along the Rudolf-Kauschka High Route to the Neuer Reichenberger Hut, near which you can admire the lake.
Trips to nearby locations
Taking for granted visits to St. Jakob in Defereggen and to the other two main centers in the valley, viz. Hopfgarten e St. Veit, there are several trips that can be arranged to visit interesting locations.
The first suggestion is for a trip to Lienz, the main center of East Tyrol; here you will find a very upscale and elegant pedestrian area with various clubs and stores. Above Lienz it is worth visiting the Bruck Castle, dating back to the 13th century.
Other rather nearby centers worth visiting are then Matrei in Osttirol, picturesque location a few kilometers from Lienz and Kals am Großglockner, charming alpine village at the foot of the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria.
