According to witnesses, the passenger had refuted to wear a seatbelt, lowered the table when asked not to do so, and did not wear a face mask properly.
"What happened on Flight 700 was absolutely horrific. In my 20-plus years at Southwest, I have never seen such an inexcusable and violent assault on a flight attendant by a passenger. Worse, the incident was captured on video and broadcast through television channels and media."

Not an isolated case, unfortunately, as Lyn Montgomery, president of the Southwest Labor Union, points out:
"From April 8 to May 15, there were 477 incidents of passenger misconduct on Southwest Airlines planes.
This unprecedented number of incidents has reached an intolerable level, and passenger noncompliance events are becoming more aggressive in nature."
