In the latest update of the official Marriott Bonvoy app, the one you have to use to book and be assured that you will receive the benefits and points provided for your stay, a small new feature has popped up: the points expiration date.
What's new in the app
In this article:
Unlike airline loyalty programs, hotel chains are definitely more generous In terms of point validity, or we could say that few airlines are as generous as hotel chains.
What is new is that the latest version of the app shows the expiration date of bonvoy points, something that was previously shown only on the desktop version of the official Marriott website.
When Bonvoy points expire
Every Bonvoy subscriber's piggy bank automatically empties after 24 months of inactivity, this then means that if you do not make any movement of your account for 2 years you will lose all your remaining credit. To avoid this just make a stay, paid or premium, every 729 days and automatically the duration of points will be extended for another two years.
There should be no confusion with the date of accumulation, which does matter in, for example, Emirates and Singapore's FF, in which case the points have a single expiration date, the famous 2 years of inactivity, so there is no need to remember when you have accumulated points and when they expire, because there is only one expiration date.
How long can I use my points
The one above is my current balance, if I did no activity today my points would expire on August 8, 2025. It is important to know, however, that the date of using the points can also be after the deadline, as long as the reservation of the stay is made before the deadline. This means that in my case I could book a room on August 7, 2025 for a stay in December 2026 using the points without any problems.
