Obtaining status, and maintaining it, is a constant race against time unless you have achieved peace of mind with the "forever" card, what you need to understand, however, is that each program has its own rules of accumulation, validity and expiration of status.

    Three things to understand

    1. Qualifying points, no matter what they are called, expire and are reset every year. Excluding programs that have the rollover mode, all others reset this counter to zero when the qualifying period expires. In contrast award points have a different duration e different expiration rules from card to card.
    2. Qualification period is the window of time a traveler has to obtain the points needed to receive or renew status, not to be confused with the duration of status
    3. Duration of status is the validity of the level and has a duration generally not aligned with the qualifying period. The status generally lasts 12 months, but there are some cases in which it lasts almost 2 years.
    4. Some programs have soft landing, or the function of controlled status degrowth.

We start of course with the frequent flyer of the Italian national airline.  The period of status qualification Flying useful for the renewal of the level closes at 12/31 of each year, the next morning all members start from scratch and have another 12 months to renew their status. Last year there were problems (it was the program's first time) and it is not certain that the date will be exactly 12/31, it may take a few days in January as well. So if you see your qualifying mileage account reset, don't be alarmed, that's right. Status on the other hand, unless special promotions, expires each year on January 31.

When the status with Air France KLM expires.

The Flying Blue program does not have a fixed expiration date. The zero date is generally the date of enrollment in the program, but then it changes as the status changes by the individual subscriber. The basic operation is always the same. Those enrolled in French/Dutch frequent flyer have 12 months to To accumulate the XP points needed for level renewal. Regarding status, lasts the classic 12 months. This program guarantees The soft landing for those who failed to renew their memberships, a way to not have to start from scratch.

To sum up: with Air France and KLM. the end date of the XP point accumulation period coincides with the expiration of the status. On the bright side. the excess XP points are automatically transferred to the following year. FB points, on the other hand, expire only if you don't have the status and only after 24 months without any qualifying activity, so it only takes one flight to renew the validity of the points.

When status expires with British Airways

In BA's Executive Club the reference date remains fixed based on the day of enrollment in the loyalty program. Tier points, i.e., those that must be accumulated to obtain/renew status, reset each year, on the anniversary date. While status expires at the end of the month following the anniversary month.

When does Miles&More status expire in Lufthansa group airlines

Miles & More is in the process of kicking off the revolution of the program; it was to be implemented in 2020, but the pandemic has changed the company's plans, and now the time has come. January 1 changes everything e the biggest change will be that from then on the status will last for one year and not biennial. The end date is, always and in any case, December 31, and the new collection begins with the new year, no matter when you signed up for the program. What will happen with the marriage between ITA and Lufthansa at the moment is not yet written, so I do not recommend any strategy.

    Other loyalty programs

There are many Italians who have status with other loyalty programs, for example I as it is known accumulate Krisflyer points and try to renew then status with Singapore Airlines, but Aegean's program is also very popular in Italy, as are the statuses in the loyalty programs of Emirates, Qatar and American airlines.

    Emirates Skywards

The Emirates loyalty program does not have a fixed date, or rather the date is when the status is obtained.

Your qualifying miles expire About a year after they were matured, I say approximately because technically they are reset at the end of the 12th month following the month when they were accrued (e.g. you fly on January 13, you lose them on February 28 of the following year). Once you qualify, the clock resets and you will have up to 13 additional months to meet the requirements to keep Or reach a higher state.

    Singapore Krisflyer

For those who, like me, use the Asian carrier's program to obtain a Star Alliance card, the rules are very simple.

You have 12 months to accumulate enough qualifying miles to renew your status; there is a simple chart in the app (or on the site) that helps you understand where you are in the chase and how long until the deadline.

When the status with American companies expires

American Airlines the status qualification period begins on March 1 and ends on the last day of February. However, once you obtain Elite status with AAdvantage, the membership period will last until March 31 of the year following the end of the qualifying year. Therefore, the loyalty points you earn between March 1, 2024, and February 28, 2025, will get you the status until March 31, 2026.

Delta has been in the middle of the storm for several months because of the Skymiles program changes, the duration of the status is similar to that of Volare. The card is valid for 13 months following the calendar year in which you obtained status. If you obtained status during this year, your card will expire at the end of January 2025

United Airlines Star Alliance airline also uses the typical Flying mode. The program year with United Airlines lasts until January 31 of the following year. Therefore, your status is valid for the year you earn it, for the whole of the following year, and for one month in the following year.

    In conclusion

As I often explain here on TFC. not everyone has to chase status, not everyone needs the card. Having the status, however, unlocks so many benefits that allow the frequent traveler to have less stress every time he or she sets foot in an airport.
